Machine Tools Applications for Inflatable Seals

The Client:

A custom machine tool manufacturer specializing in electro-chemical machining processes.

The Situation:

The custom-designed machine tool has a machining table that is mounted on a pedestal. The table is capable of being raised, lowered and angled to accommodate the cutting angle required. The electro-chemical cutting process employed requires the use of a saline solution.

Application Requirements:

The task was to protect the mechanical positioning apparatus of the pedestal from the saline solution while simultaneously permitting full movement of the table for positioning of the materials to be cut.

The Approach:

The need to seal off the area from the cutting table surface to the bottom of the pedestal and not restrict the movement of the table for positioning purposes would require the design and manufacture of a fabric-reinforced elastomer boot.

The Solution:

A fabric-reinforced Neoprene boot, 74.5 inches square was designed and hand fabricated in an accordion design to meet the requirement of expanding up to a four-inch height. Note photographs below.
